Irina Odoevtseva is known primarily as a poet and author of the memoirs On the Banks of the Neva and On the Banks of the Seine. She left Russia in 1922 and returned only in 1987. She was the last representative of the distant Silver Age to see her books published in the USSR. The return was triumphant - as if as a reward for all the hardships of emigrant life. In emigration, Irina Odoevtseva continued to write poetry, but also turned to prose fiction and became known as an author of novels and short stories. Odoevtseva's prose, which became a significant phenomenon outside Russia, remained unfamiliar to Russian readers for a long time. Each novel or short story is interesting in its own way, and in each of them one can sense the writer's belonging to a new cultural reality - Russian Paris, longing for irrevocably gone times and looking forward to the future.
