The beginning of the 20th century. The Portuguese colony of Sao Tome and Principe, lost on the equator, has been in a tropical stupor for centuries. Progress and enlightenment come there suddenly, threatening the economic collapse of both the colony and the metropolis if the British consul discovers that slavery is being practiced on the plantations. A new governor, the metropolitan dandy and womanizer Luis Bernardo Valença, arrives on a special mission from the Portuguese king.

A novel of epic scope powerfully draws the reader into the world of the sultry tropics and their colorful inhabitants - white plantation owners and Angolan workers. Like a moisture-breathing equatorial forest, it is saturated with intense emotions, the confrontation of high and low feelings and the collisions of a love story, passionate and poetic.

First published in 2003 in Portugal, the novel by Miguel Sousa Tavares (b. 1950) was voted best book of the decade in his home country. Since then, Equator has been published with unfailing success in dozens of countries in eleven languages.
