In his two-volume history of economic thought from antiquity to the mid-19th century, the eve of the marginalist revolution, Murray Rothbard describes the development of ideas about key economic concepts—scarcity, exchange, trade, utility, value, cost, price, money, interest—and the economic laws that bind them, as well as economic policy, which gradually evolved from all-encompassing government regulation and meticulous regulation to relative non-intervention and economic freedom (laissez-faire).
The author does not, as is often the case, limit himself to a cursory exposition of the ideas of the Great Economists; rather, restoring the living fabric of history, he introduces readers to "minor" figures whose contributions to the development of economic science are sometimes more significant than those of many celebrities. Rothbard shows that economic theory is not a constantly progressing system of views, that it can and sometimes does move in a zig-zag and even retrograde trajectory, with later systematic errors displacing earlier but correct paradigms, thereby sending economic thought down the wrong path.
