Jeans are one of the most common and versatile items of clothing for modern people, so ubiquitous that they often escape the attention of fashion researchers. S. Woodward and D. Miller examine jeans from multiple perspectives—ethnography, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. In their book, they draw on fieldwork, interviewing residents of three London streets to understand the practices of wearing jeans and the biographical context behind this choice. Building on ethnographic observations, Woodward and Miller move on to an analysis of anthropological theories and such seemingly self-evident concepts as comfort and the ordinary. They seek to understand the dual human desire: to simultaneously be visible and yet undistinguished, to follow norms and transcend them, to be an individual and yet feel part of a global world. Sophie Woodward is a sociologist and professor at the University of Manchester. Daniel Miller is an anthropologist, professor of anthropology, and director of the Centre for Digital Anthropology at University College London.
