"Jenny Gerhardt" is the second novel by the classic American writer Theodore Dreiser, published eleven years after "Sister Carrie". And if the puritanically minded public and critics met Dreiser's debut book with extreme hostility, accusing the writer of immorality, then they maintained a haughty silence towards "Jenny Gerhardt". Apparently, the realistic picture of the life of a poor and naive girl turned out to be too strong a blow for readers eager to achieve the "American dream".
Much later, the merits of "Jenny Gerhardt" and Dreiser himself were finally recognized. The American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded him the Honorary Gold Medal for outstanding achievements in the field of art and literature.
The novel was published in 1911, then the editors of Harper's magazine greatly changed the text before publication, they considered that the text contained obscenities for that time and criticism of religion. Jenny's character has been simplified, making her a less complex and reflective heroine.
This edition was translated from the 1992 University of Pennsylvania edition, which restored the original text of the novel, restoring Lester's social and religious criticism and materialistic determinism, which is balanced by Jenny's equally strong idealism and natural mysticism.
An elegant series for elegant women. Refinement, attention to detail, pleasant colors and tactile materials, impeccable style - all this is about the new designer design. The capsule series is united by a common picture on the spine, and a layout with illustrations inside.
