Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola's Striga, or On the Mockery of Demons occupies a special place among demonological works of the early modern period. Before us is an "elegant dialogue" written in the tradition of the Italian Renaissance, but devoted to a topic atypical of this movement - the reality of malicious witchcraft and the need to persecute witches. The author of Striga, along with humanistic education, also demonstrates the standard methods of accusing witchcraft, introduced into circulation by the inquisitors of the Dominican Order. Of particular interest are the circumstances connecting Striga with the real witchcraft trial in Mirandola, which took place in 1524-1526. At this trial, Gianfrancesco Pico represented the secular authorities as a count and ruler, fully supported the accusation and wrote his work in support and justification of his actions.
