The second volume of a saga trilogy. In September 1838 in the Indian Ocean, the schooner Ibis, carrying prisoners and hired laborers from Calcutta to Mauritius, was caught in the middle of a powerful storm. The novel follows the fates of the people caught in the storm - not only natural, but historical. Some of them are thrown by the storm and fate into Canton, China, where trade with foreigners is centered. Despite the Chinese emperor's efforts to stop the opium trade, ships of Europeans traveling between India and China still deliver the potion. The central figures in the second book of the trilogy are a wealthy opium merchant-passenger from Bombay; a former Indian raja turned clerk on a trade mission; a young French orphan; and a motley company united in the pursuit of romance and wealth. Each of them is trying to cope with their losses, and some with the freedom that has befallen them.
