This book includes magazine articles by economist, politician, and reformer Yevgeny Gaidar, many of which later became chapters in his books. Drawing on his experience in high-level politics, the works of Russian and foreign economists, historians, and sociologists, as well as statistical data, Yevgeny Gaidar analyzes the problems of "catch-up development," the connections between Russian and European history, and the forks and gaps in Russia's modernization path. His research focuses on two lines of civilizational development: the repeatedly reproducible "Eastern despotism" (or "agrarian empire") and the "ancient anomaly," descended from the ancient Greek polis and embodying the ideas of democracy, freedom, and property based on law. One of the central questions preoccupying the author is: what is the fate of Russia, finding itself at the intersection of two fundamentally different sociopolitical worlds? A significant portion of the book consists of publications from the contemporary journal "Vestnik Evropy – 21st Century," of which Yegor Gaidar was one of the founders and leading contributors. These texts, in their journalistic form, are aimed at a broader readership and also convey the author's ideas in a more concentrated form.
