About 18,000 years ago, the first humans came to North America across the Bering Isthmus, which once connected the continent to Asia. For many centuries, different cultures developed here. Native Americans hunted and gathered fruits and roots; tribes living in more favorable conditions turned to agriculture. Migrations continued, and by 3600 B.C., hunters and gatherers in Central America had also turned to agriculture. Later, the Olmec, Zapotec, and Maya civilizations would emerge in the region, as would the Mixtecs, Toltecs, and Aztecs. The Chavin, Nazca, and Mochica cultures that developed in South America were the precursors to the great Inca civilization in the Andes Mountains. In Southeast Asia, tribal movements also took place. More than 40,000 years ago, ancient seafarers managed to reach the remote Australian mainland and the western Pacific islands. Between 900 and 1200 AD, the Maori, farmers and fearless warriors, settled New Zealand. With the arrival of European explorers, the cultures of the indigenous people of Australia and the surrounding islands changed dramatically.
