The book of the outstanding Russian historian, geographer and philosopher Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev is devoted to the little-studied period of the VI-VIII centuries, when an ancient power – the Great Turkic Khaganate – was born and flourished in the expanses of Eurasia. The focus of work is the people and nature of the Great Steppe. The peculiar material culture of the ancient Turks and, more importantly, the forms of their social existence and social institutions are considered: ale, the specific-ladder system, the hierarchy of ranks, military discipline, diplomacy, as well as the presence of a well-developed worldview opposed to the ideological systems of neighboring countries. According to Gumilev, the name "Turk" did not disappear and, moreover, spread to half of Asia thanks to the Arabs, who began to call all militant nomads north of Sogdiana Turks. Later, this term was transformed and became the name of the language family. A detailed analysis of the ethnic, political and religious aspects of the life of the ancient Turks is combined with a lively figurative manner of presentation.
