South Dakota, the dry summer of 1950. A freight train rushes through the darkness across the prairie at night, hiding in one of its cars are two Lakota boys, Reuben and Levi. They have run away from home and are now hiding from a government agent who is supposed to take Reuben to an Indian boarding school.

By chance, they meet the Steinbachs. With their support, Reuben and Levi decide to travel across the vast plains to the quarries in western Minnesota to obtain stone for their great-grandfather's new sacred pipe. After all, the beloved pipe, passed down from generation to generation by the Lone Dogs, was mercilessly shattered by the very agent pursuing them.

Ahead of the boys lies a long journey—an anxious and dangerous one. But at the same time, it will allow them to see and understand much, including how the earth shapes the people who live, love, dream, and die on it.

... The story that began as a chase evolves into a complex drama of intersecting destinies, where each character must open their hearts, forgive themselves, and finally find a home.
