The memoirs of Benno Zieser are a unique testimony from a German infantryman who survived the Battle of Stalingrad. He recounts the march to Stalingrad, which ended in a crushing defeat for the Germans. Zieser witnessed the full horror, futility, and hopelessness of the war. The battle, with no prospects for the Germans, ended in a sea of blood. On the last day of January 1943, the German 6th Army surrendered to the Russians at Stalingrad.
