Silka was only sixteen years old when she entered the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1942. The girl's beauty catches the attention of the camp's senior officers, and Silka is forcibly separated from the other female prisoners. She quickly learns that power, even unwanted power, equals survival.

The war is over. The camp is liberated. Silka, however, is accused of espionage and of sleeping with the enemy and is sent to the Vorkuta camp.

And here Silka faces death, terror and violence on a daily basis. But she is lucky: a kind doctor takes the girl under his wing and begins teaching her to become a nurse. In her quest to survive, the girl discovers a willpower she never knew she had. She begins tentatively to make friends in this harsh, new reality and is surprised to realize that, despite everything that has happened to her, there is room in her heart for love.
