The life of Japanese novelist, translator, essayist, and literary critic Ango Sakaguchi reflects 20th-century Japan. He rose to prominence in the 1930s, but achieved true recognition after the war. His work gave voice to postwar Japan, then standing amid the ruins of its own identity. His experiences during the war, his fascination with the works of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, and his immersion in European existentialism—all of this shaped the unique perspective that enabled Ango Sakaguchi to become one of the pioneers of modern Japanese literature. This collection includes selected works by the writer and his "Autobiography in the Palm of His Hand," a masterful example of ironic self-reflection. "Kurotani Village," "Little House in the Bamboo Thicket," "In the Forest Under the Cherry Blossoms," and the artistic and historical chronicle "Life at Stake," dedicated to the story of the last missionaries in Japan during the era of isolation, allow us to see Japan in all its paradoxicality and intrinsic value.
