Ivan Egorovich Zabelin (1820–1908) was an outstanding Russian historian and archaeologist. Zabelin’s most famous works – “The Home Life of Russian Tsars” (1862) and “The Home Life of Russian Tsarinas” (1869) – were the first holistic studies of the daily life of the tsar’s court in Russian historical literature. Convinced that “a person’s domestic life is an environment in which the embryos and rudiments of all the great events of his history lie,” Zabelin was interested not only in the ideas of the ancient Russian society about a woman and a queen, but also in palace rules and traditions, clothing, jewelry and entertainment. Turgenev appreciated in Zabelin’s manner “clear simplicity of presentation” and “Russian spirit” – advantages that make Zabelin’s research accessible to any enthusiastic reader.
