Animals were ubiquitous in medieval life: they were hunted, eaten, milked, sheared, ridden, and plowed. However, this book focuses on a very special category of animals—pets, which people kept simply for company. They occupied a privileged position: they were allowed into places where other animals were forbidden, they slept in their master's bed, their owners carried them in their arms, fed them exquisite food, and often treated them with more warmth and care than most people. Moreover, unlike a thoroughbred horse or a hunting falcon, which could also be highly prized, a pet was often expected to do nothing more than be by their owner's side and entertain them.

To date, no large-scale studies of pets in Western Europe during the Middle Ages have been undertaken. This is the first such work, written based on a variety of historical, literary, and iconographic sources, and revealing how pets lived, what they were like, who kept them, and what a person's pet could tell them about.
