This collection includes three plays by Bernard Shaw, exploring themes that continually preoccupied the great playwright throughout his long career: social deficiencies, the unpredictability of human nature, and the duality of the human soul.
"Heartbreak House" is one of Shaw's signature plays, a witty and subtle tragicomedy of British high society after World War I, inspired, in his own words, by the plays of Chekhov.
"Mrs. Warren's Profession," on the other hand, is one of Shaw's saddest plays: its title character resorted to extremely unseemly acts to provide a better life for her daughter, and was ultimately rejected by that daughter. The play was deemed immoral and was banned from the stage until 1902. The political grotesque "Bitter but True" is a merciless verdict that the author passes on British intellectuals of the post-war period - "lost souls who are descending into the abyss", whose views, characters and behavior were affected by the unnatural structure of life.
