Czeslaw Milosz was a distinguished Polish poet and intellectual. The best of his novels was written in Polish, but first published in France (Milosz's books were banned in Poland). It is a novel about good and evil, sin and grace, predestination and freedom. It is a lost paradise of childhood on the bank of a fictional river, it is "a search for reality, purified by the passing of time" (C.Milosz). Its protagonist is the author's alter ego - a growing creature, constantly overcoming its limits.
The novel will undoubtedly join a number of books (from Aksakov to Nabokov), opening the world of childhood. It has been translated into Russian for the first time.
