The novella The Long Winter, like all books in the autobiographical series of American writer Laura Ingles Wilder, is a lesson in life: do not give up, do not give up, believe and hope!

The main character Laura is fourteen years old. Her family is being tested again. Hunger and cold are their main enemies. It also takes a lot of money so that Mary, Laura's older sister, can go to college for the blind. And Laura gets a job to help her sister. She has to do an unloved thing - sewing, but she, like all Ingles, does not murmur, but just does what she considers her duty.
The impressive part of the book is dedicated to the young and desperate Almanzo Wilder (the future husband of Laura Ingles), who, risking his life, in the cold and a blizzard, goes along with a friend for provisions, extracts several bags of wheat and thereby saves Laura’s family and their neighbors from imminent death.
Love and care for each other help the family overcome all difficulties. And, of course, Father Charles, a man of extraordinary fortitude and strength of spirit, for the sake of the happiness of his beloved wife and daughters, can turn the whole world around.
Thanks to reliable writing – the smell of coffee, pumpkin pie, milk iced in a bucket, Christmas gifts that reached the Ingles only in May – the migratory everyday life of the family excites and makes the reader want to compare their teenage growing up with the growing up of Laura.
