Battleships of the Connecticut type became the largest and most heavily armed dreadnoughts of the United States. After years of building "offshore coastal battleships," they created a "true" ocean battleship that differed in size and artillery strength from their foreign contemporaries. But ironically, by the time the "Connecticuts" joined the fleet, they, like the "Virginias" built before them, had become immediately obsolete after the "Dreadnought" joined the British fleet.
