The only thing available 1
In this edition of the Diary of the Novice of Optina Pustyn Nikolai Belyaev (Reverend Nikon the Confessor), which he kept from 1907 to 1910, the full text is published for the first time - in all known publications, significant cuts have been made.
The Diary shows how the spiritual growth of the young novice, a truly devoted disciple of Elder Barsanuphius, gradually occurs, and helps to understand how great is the significance of the spiritual guidance of an elder in the matter of human salvation.
In the process of preparing the manuscript, all previously known typewritten and handwritten versions of the Diary were studied, as well as one of the very first copies - a handwritten notebook in private hands; a lot of textual work was carried out - all versions of the text were brought together and the most accurate of them were selected. Minor editorial clarifications are given in square brackets.
We draw the attention of readers to the fact that the Diary is accompanied by comments, which are compiled from the memoirs of Ivan Belyaev, the brother of Fr. Nikon; they are placed at the end of the book.
The footnotes provide brief biographical information about the persons mentioned in the Diary; historical events and facts are covered in more detail; in some cases, some controversial issues of church and public life are explained.
We hope that this publication will be of interest to a wide range of readers and will help them find answers to many questions of spiritual life that arise in our difficult times.
