The Este Dynasty: The Politics of Magnificence: The Renaissance in Ferrara

Pavel Aleshin, art historian and specialist in the Italian Renaissance, introduces readers to the D'Este dynasty, the family that ruled Ferrara during the Renaissance as the Medici ruled Florence. During their reign, Ferrara reached unprecedented prosperity. The D'Este were extremely erudite and educated people, who understood well that patronage of the arts was necessary not only for pleasure, but also to strengthen and magnify their own power, as well as to win the endless rivalry with other Italian princely families. The cultural policy of the d'Este family of Ferrara was called by the humanists the "politics of splendor" as early as the fifteenth century. This capacious in meaning and content concept most accurately reflects the life and activities of the brilliant rulers of a small but beautiful city of Northern Italy. It was the "policy of splendor" that allowed the art of such artists and poets of the Golden Age of Ferrara as Cosimo Tura, Francesco del Cossa, Ercole de Roberti, Matteo Maria Boiardo, Ludovico Ariosto, and Torquato Tasso to flourish.
