This book from the Polystoria series is based on the first book of the HSE Laboratory of Medieval Studies, Medieval Europe: East and West, published in 2015.
The first section examines marriage strategies and naming strategies among the ruling elite of different societies in Northern and Eastern Europe, from Scandinavia to Georgia.
The second section traces the circulation of texts and ideas in the Mediterranean region using the example of the spread of genuine and imaginary works of Aristotle.
The third section compares the models of attitudes toward non-believers developed in the Latin West and the Orthodox East. The fourth section analyzes the ambassadorial ceremonies (and their descriptions by interested witnesses) at the meeting of the envoys of Ivan the Terrible and Emperor Maximilian II in 1576.
The final section will discuss one of the dramatic periods in the history of Russian medieval studies.
The book is addressed to historians, philologists, religious scholars, cultural scientists and political scientists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in European history.
