Robert McKee addresses the various definitions of "dialog" and examines each of them, explaining the theory with examples from masterpieces of dramatic prose, movies and TV shows. Through these quotes, he demonstrates two basic rules of good dialog: one, that every exchange of lines in dialog creates action and counteraction that move the scene; and two, that although actions are expressed in outward appearances or speech, the source of a character's actions is invisible and hidden in subtext.
