This story is simple, like all truly great things in this world: love, loyalty, and fortitude against hatred, envy, betrayal, and cowardice. A young girl named O-Sen promises her lover to wait for him to return from a foreign land. Time passes, and the Great Fire of 1704 burns Edo almost to the ground, killing her entire family. Trying to save the girl, a young man with unrequited love perishes in the fire. O-Sen rescues a baby from the fire, and he will become the source of both her joy and sorrow. She doesn't know that time will pass, and this baby will save her...

The meticulously depicted realities of Japanese life of that time lend a sense of authenticity to the narrative. The lives of ordinary citizens and the events of that distant era are described so vividly that it seems as if the story is taking place not at the very beginning of the century, but here and now.
