Boris Vasilyevich Bedny was a Soviet writer, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, who held the position of a teacher at the Literary Institute, where he led seminars on higher literary courses (among his students are many famous writers, such as Chingiz Aitmatov). Boris Poor brought fame to Boris Bedny with the story "Devchata", translated into fifteen foreign languages and became the basis for the picture of the same name. Everyone in Russia is familiar with the movie "Devchata", filmed in 1961 by director Yuri Chulyukin with Nadezhda Rumyantseva in the title role. The cheerful comedy about love in a woodcutters' village lost in the Urals not only captivated audiences throughout the Soviet Union, but also won several prestigious prizes at foreign film festivals. The story "Devchata", however, in many respects differs from the famous picture: the characters are more deeply revealed, the harsh life in a remote village is shown much more realistically, and even in the plot there are significant differences. This edition, which in addition to the story "Devchata" includes the best stories of Boris Poor, will be a real gift not only to fans of the movie, but also to all lovers of good Russian prose.
