The story of Joan of Arc, heroine of the Hundred Years' War, is one of the key "sites of memory" for French culture. Since the fifteenth century, her images have been repeatedly reproduced by painters, graphic artists, sculptors, engravers and caricaturists. In her book, Olga Togoeva traces how approaches to the iconography of the Maid of Orleans changed in different historical periods and how such changes were linked to the political culture of France. According to these completely fictional, often strange, and sometimes simply fantastic images, the author offers to study the likes and dislikes of the French of the Middle Ages, New and Modern times, their views on social processes, current political events, religious and social problems. French kings of the late Middle Ages, Cardinal Richelieu and Napoleon Bonaparte, party leaders and statesmen of modern France - all of them for six centuries have used the image of Joan of Arc, playing off one or another existing myths about her or creating their own legends. Olga Togoeva is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, Chief Scientific Associate of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
