In the final centuries of the Roman Empire, the dominant ideal of female virtue underwent a radical transformation: the pure yet fertile heroine of Greek and Roman romance was replaced by the Christian virgin heroine. How did this new ideal arise, and why did Roman society embrace it, even though it undermined the very foundations of the ancient world order? How did women themselves respond to the challenge to their traditional role as matrons and matriarchs? Drawing on ancient romances, hagiographic texts, funerary inscriptions, and polemical writings of the era, Kate Cooper takes an unusual approach to these questions: instead of focusing on the pioneering Christians themselves, she reconstructs the perspective of an educated Roman observing these changes from the outside. Her study focuses on the rivalry between pagan and Christian elites for moral authority, as well as the transformation of ideas about sexuality, family, and morality, which became a cultural revolution with far-reaching consequences for religion and politics. Kate Cooper is a historian and professor at Royal Holloway University in London.
