In 1892, the young writer Alexei Peshkov published a story in a provincial newspaper under the pseudonym "M. Gorky." Within a few years, this name had achieved nationwide fame. "Peshkov's every public appearance caused a genuine sensation; interviewers flocked to him, he was enthusiastically escorted and met at train stations, telegrams were sent to him from literary soirées, his portraits and even statues appeared in all sorts of forms," wrote his contemporary, literary scholar S. A. Vengerov. Gorky's work was the subject of both admiration and controversy. His romantic images of freedom-loving heroes, realistic sketches of life on the underbelly of society, and reflections on eternal questions about human nature, fortitude, freedom, and personal choice have captivated readers for over a hundred years. This collection includes Maxim Gorky's most famous works: the autobiographical stories "Childhood," "Among People," and "My Universities," which contemporaries considered the writer's pinnacle; the short stories "The Old Woman Izergil," "Makar Chudra," and "Chelkash"; the play "At the Bottom"; "Song of the Falcon" and "Song of the Petrel." The book features illustrations by Boris Dekhterev and Dementy Shmarinov, classic Soviet book artists.
