The names of the Grimm brothers, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), the great German folklorists, authors of the famous "Children's and Household Tales", are known, perhaps, to everyone from the earliest childhood. But few people realize that this collection has never been properly published in Russian. Filled with life, preserving the salt of the earth that gave birth to them, these wonderful stories were carefully recorded for half a century by brothers obsessed with love for the word, the heritage of their ancestors, and the creative power of folk genius. The fairy tales were preserved from oblivion, becoming a priceless treasure of all mankind. One of the highest achievements of German Romanticism, this collection turned the history of fairy tales upside down, inspired collectors in many countries, gave birth to a galaxy of remarkable researchers, stimulated the development of new scientific disciplines, and changed children's literature once and for all. The translation published in this edition is the result of many years of hard work of one of the best Russian translators K.M. Azadovsky, which began in the 1970s. He managed to preserve the freshness and vividness, the great simplicity that marked the famous fairy tales, to convey a unique style, which even earned the special name of "Grimm's". Translated in colorful language, preserving the life-giving spirit imbued with echoes of the original Germanic mythology, the fairy tales at the same time happily avoided excessive Russification, which is inherent in most known translations.
