The novel "Children of Captain Grant" was first published in Paris as a separate book in 1868. It became the first part of the trilogy about Captain Nemo. On its pages, Jules Verne embodied his childhood dream of traveling. From Nantes, where in 1834 the future writer went to school, to the vastness of the Atlantic was only 50 km. From the banks of the Loire, where his father had a dacha, one could see the masts of ships. The teacher of the boarding school Jules went to told the pupils in a fascinating way about the sea adventures of her missing husband, the captain of the ship. Jules' father wanted to make a lawyer out of his son, and he began to study law in Paris. Dissatisfaction with his own life gave rise to a craving for writing in a young man. Jules Verne's dream came true. He became a world famous traveler in the fantastic world of the wonderful and the unknown. With royalties from his novels, which still captivate readers all over the world today, Jules Verne first acquired a small boat, and then a yacht, which for many years became his “floating office”. At the end of his life, the writer not only gained fame as a classic of adventure literature and the founder of science fiction, but also became a member of the French Geographical Society. The illustrations for "Children of Captain Grant" in this edition were made by the remarkable draftsman Pyotr Ivanovich Lugansky. The future artist was born in 1911, in the village of Bokovo, Lugansk province. After graduating from the seven-year plan, he left for Kharkov, where he entered one of the oldest art educational institutions in Ukraine, which was a kind of analogue of the Stieglitz school in St. Petersburg. Soon Petr Ivanovich became a universal professional. He painted in watercolor and charcoal, was engaged in lithography, engraving and easel painting. Work in the Leningrad "Uchpedgiz" was interrupted by the war. During the hostilities, Lugansky managed to make sketches of the soldier's life, painted portraits of his colleagues. After the victory over Nazi Germany, illustrating books became the main creative activity for the artist. He collaborated with the Koster magazine, painted for the Detgiz and Lenizdat publishing houses. Lugansky illustrated Furmanov's Chapaev, Kaverin's Two Captains, Belyaev's Amphibian Man, Stevenson's Treasure Island and Master of Ballantrae, Mine Reid's The White Leader, as well as books published in the Library of Soviet Fiction series. . And yet Jules Verne remained his favorite writer. Lugansky repeatedly returned to illustrating Captain Grant's Children, each time coming up with different versions of the drawings.
