Sakaguchi Ango's detective stories are set during the Meiji era—a time when Japan was undergoing a painful but necessary transformation, with centuries-old traditions giving way to newfangled trends. One of these trends is the noble gentleman Yuki Shinjuro. Descended from a family of hereditary samurai and brilliantly educated in the West, Yuki returned to his homeland with a steadfast desire to fight for justice. Not pursuing fame or fortune and unwilling to become a government official, Shinjuro becomes an amateur detective, a resource the police turn to whenever they reach a dead end.

Originally published as individual stories in periodicals, "Detective Stories of the Meiji Era" gained popularity and has since inspired two television series, a manga, and an anime. This edition includes the first ten of the twenty stories in the collection. All stories are published in Russian for the first time.
