Fyodor Alexandrovich Abramov (1920–1983) was one of the most renowned Russian writers of the 20th century, a representative of the so-called "village prose" movement—a popular literary movement in Soviet literature from the 1960s to the 1980s. Abramov achieved success with the 1958 publication of his debut novel, "Brothers and Sisters," which tells the story of life in an Old Believer village in Pinega during the Great Patriotic War. The writer traveled extensively throughout Russia and never lost touch with his native land, to which he dedicated his work—including the short stories and novellas collected in this edition: "Wooden Horses," "Pelageya," and "Alka" (a kind of trilogy about Russian women), "Fatherlessness," "Mamonikha," "Once Upon a Time There Lived a Salmon," and others. Abramov's central theme, echoing in every one of his works, is the importance of home as the foundation of human existence. Even today, readers love Fyodor Abramov's stories and novellas for their attention to the fates of ordinary people, their everyday concerns, sorrows, and joys.
