Who benefited from the USSR's most notorious corruption scandal? At whose expense did the party elite fill their pockets? And how did ordinary... cotton influence the collapse of a huge country? "Cotton case" - a series of large-scale economic crimes in Uzbekistan in the 70-80-ies. Exaggerated requirements of the USSR State Planning Committee turned out to be additions, double accounting and multi-level pyramid of lies, theft and bribery. During the investigation more than 800 criminal cases were initiated and more than 4 thousand people were convicted. But the main thing - there was an undermining of the authority of the government in the people, the principle of inviolability of communist covenants was nullified. The author of the book, writer-historian F.I. Razzakov is convinced: the "cotton case" is not a story of bribery and corruption of individual party functionaries, but an operation of the West and its accomplices inside the USSR to eliminate the existing political system in the Soviet Union.
