The early 1980s in the USSR were remembered not only for the magnificent Moscow Olympics but also for the half-empty store shelves. In many cities across the country, the food supply situation was approaching critical. Against this backdrop, Moscow's Deli No. 1, better known as the Yeliseyevsky, was a model grocery oasis, offering its customers not only luxurious interiors but also a surprisingly wide selection, even for a Moscow store. And for special customers, the selection was even wider.

The novel by Yevgeny Latiy and Vladislav Romanov is dedicated to the famous "Yeliseevsky Case"—a corruption investigation initiated by the KGB to combat the epidemic of bribery that had permeated the highest levels of government. The inspiration for Georgy Berkutov, the novel's protagonist, was the real-life director of a Moscow deli, Yuri Sokolov, who was sentenced to death by firing squad.
