Widukind of Corvey (c. 925-980) was a German historian, descended from secular Saxon feudal lords; he received a classical education, a monk of the Benedictine Corvey monastery in Westphalia. Widukind of Corvey is the author of the chronicle "Acts of the Saxons" in three books, in which, seeking to glorify the exploits of the Saxons and their kings, sets out on the basis of old sagas, songs, legends, ancient and medieval sources, his own knowledge of the history of the Saxons and the kings of the Saxon dynasty (Henry I and Otto I). The events in "Acts..." are brought up to 967, information on the history of Saxon-Slavic relations is given. He created this work at the request of Otto I's daughter, Abbess Matilda of Quedlinburg. This chronicle was later used by Titmar of Merseburg. The publication will be of interest to students and teachers of historical specialties of universities, military historians, and all those interested in the relations between Slavic and Asian peoples in the Middle Ages.
