O. Henry (real name William Sydney Porter, 1862–1910) was an American writer, humorist, and master of short stories with unexpected endings. He often drew plots from life. While in prison on embezzlement charges, he wrote his first short story. While his works had happy endings, fate did not favor the author himself. For example, the famous "Gift of the Magi" was written after he visited his dying wife for Christmas. He had time to say goodbye to his beloved, and she had given him her last gift—a gold watch chain. Unbeknownst to her, he had sold the watch to buy a ticket to his hometown with the proceeds.

This collection includes stories with unexpected endings. Their heroes range from the "little people" of big New York to frivolous and cheerful artists and writers, from rough-and-tumble neighborhoods with their touchingly loyal girlfriends, to the inhabitants of the Wild West—cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Their plots are always grippingly engaging, their endings swift and unexpected. They are all full of subtle humor, surprising comparisons, and unpredictable endings. The characters are noble and romantic, inventive and resourceful, optimistic and full of life, and they find a way out of any situation.
