Dazai Osamu (1909-1948) is one of the greatest figures in Japanese literature of the XNUMXth century, the century of world upheavals, breaking the habitual way of life, rapid changes in the conditions of human life and its quality. Particularly tangible changes took place in Japan, which in a relatively short time has turned from a feudal country into one of the most highly developed countries in the world. Naturally, the breaking of age-old foundations turned into considerable human losses. The human psyche simply could not, did not have time to adapt to rapidly changing life circumstances. That is why there are so many tragic figures in Japanese literature of the twentieth century. And, perhaps, one of the most tragic is Dazai Osamu.
It is difficult to attribute it to a particular literary movement. Many call him a classic of the “novel about himself” (watakushi-shosetsu), others speak of closeness to romanticism, but despite the fact that both are undoubtedly present in his work, Dazai Osamu’s prose is difficult to fit into the narrow framework of one genre. The writer lived a short life (he died when he was forty) life, but left behind a rich literary heritage. He wrote about one hundred and forty stories, several stories and many essays on a variety of topics. This volume includes his most famous works.
