Prokudin-Gorsky is one of the pioneers of color photography, who created in 1909-1916 by order of Nicholas II a unique collection of photographs, which can be called a visual encyclopedia of the Russian Empire. The photographer managed to capture the world on the eve of its collapse; people looked into the camera lens without knowing that their lives would soon change - forever and irreparably.
In the album we can see the faces of these people – and not only those who made history, but also ordinary, unremarkable residents of cities and villages. Perhaps this was how our ancestors were: they wore bright sundresses, like Russian peasant women, or colorful robes, like men on the streets of Samarkand, looked at the photographer with wide-open eyes, like peasant children in Yasnaya Polyana, or squinted incredulously, like sarts in white turms. All of these people will be discussed in this book. The fate of the unsuccessful Bukhara emir, the great Russian writer, a monk from a remote hermitage and workers from an arms factory, an invisible thread was connected by one single person with a camera - S. M. Prokudin-Gorsky.
