The dialogue "Circe" by the Italian humanist of the 16th century G. Gelli is devoted to the problems of moral, psychological and social existence of man and his place in the world, which were relevant for the late Renaissance. This time became the most difficult test of man's strength, which he did not always withstand with dignity, since he turned out to be more complex, more contradictory, more base than the ideal set by the humanists. The traditional plot about the island of the sorceress Circe, on which Odysseus (Ulysses) and his companions found themselves, is transformed by the author into a search for an answer to the question: "Is it good to be human?" Having met various animals on the island, into which people who had sailed there were turned, Ulysses asks Circe to return them to their former appearance. The sorceress agrees on the condition that they themselves must desire it. Their agreement determines the content of "Circe". What choice will Odysseus' interlocutors make? And what is Man? This topic sounds relevant again today. The publication is addressed to specialists and students of the humanities, as well as to all those interested in the culture of the Renaissance.
