"The Face of Another" is a recognized masterpiece by Kobo Abe, a Japanese master of profound and paradoxical philosophical prose. The novel's unnamed hero and narrator is a scientist injured in a laboratory explosion. Fearing loneliness and alienation, he tries to hide his burns, focusing his efforts on creating a realistic mask that would once again make him part of the world of people with normal faces. But upon donning it, the scientist suddenly realizes that it is not he who is using the mask, but the mask that is using him, provoking bizarre desires and actions and gradually altering his personality. The fear of self-loss and the fear of rejection, the endless search for his true self, create a mixture no less explosive than the one that burned his real face.
