The book of the writer Georgy Georgievich Demidov (1908-1987) included selected stories about the life of prisoners of the Gulag. Demidov himself was a prisoner of the Kolyma camps: in 1938 the young physicist was arrested and spent fourteen years on Kolyma. His fate was reflected in the work of Varlam Shalamov (The Life of an Engineer Kipreev, Spetszakaz, Ivan Fedorovich; the play Anna Ivanovna is dedicated to Georgy Demidov). Demidov is called a writer of the Tolstoy school: he is scrupulous and accurate, his texts can be perceived as historical sources. On them you can study not only the camp life morals, but also the feelings, emotions of people experiencing hell. At the same time, the distinctive feature of Demidov-writer is his ability to see in any person his elevating features.
The book was created as part of a joint program of the Ivan Limbach Publishing House and the Gulag History Museum and the Memory Foundation.
