The book by writer Georgy Georgievich Demidov (1908–1987) includes selected stories about the lives of GULAG prisoners. Demidov himself was a prisoner of the Kolyma camps: in 1938, the young physicist was arrested and spent fourteen years in Kolyma. His fate was reflected in the works of Varlam Shalamov (The Life of Engineer Kipreev, Special Order, Ivan Fyodorovich; the play Anna Ivanovna is dedicated to Georgy Demidov). Demidov is called a writer of the Tolstoyan school: he is scrupulous and precise, his texts can be perceived as historical sources. They can be used to study not only camp life and customs, but also the feelings and emotions of people experiencing hell. At the same time, the distinctive feature of Demidov the writer is his ability to see in any person the features that elevate him. The book was created as part of a joint program of the Ivan Limbakh Publishing House and the Gulag History Museum and Memory Fund.
