This edition for the first time in Russian presents readers with a full author’s version of the historical novel by one of the outstanding German writers Hans Fallada. The novel “What’s Next, Little Man?” is one of the most famous works of German literature of the twentieth century. Published in Germany in 1932, it made Hans Fallada famous all over the world, and at home became the reason for accusing the writer of anti-Nazi activities, removing the book from libraries and burning a significant part of the circulation.
Under conditions of censorship, the text of the first edition was “correctly” edited and became shorter than the author’s version by almost a quarter. The full text in German was only published in 2016. Today, the full author’s version becomes available to the Russian-speaking reader.
In the center of the plot are young lovers Johannes and Emma, who decide to connect their fates and create a family. They believe that love will help them overcome all difficulties. But the reality is much more complicated than they imagined. The country's economy is in deep crisis, more than a third of the adult population is unemployed, Nazi thugs march through the streets. The life of a young family turns into a desperate struggle against poverty and lack of rights
