Orthodox theology has its own specificity. Since the seventeenth century, having been subjected to Western influences coming from Catholicism and Protestantism, and then from philosophy, this specificity has been somewhat lost. The invasion of the humanities into many areas of theology in the West presented it with a new challenge: the possibility of greater scientific rigor opened up for various sections of theology, but it also meant the danger of secularization. The aim of this book is to draw on Orthodox Tradition to redefine the nature and specific methods of Orthodox theology as a whole and in its various fields: in dogmatic theology, in biblical studies and hermeneutics, in patrology, in Church history, in moral theology and bioethics, in hagiography, in iconology, in canonics and pastoral theology..... Written in simple and easy-to-understand language, this book is not only addressed to those who do theology and teach the above-mentioned disciplines; it will be of interest to all believers and will prove useful in their ecclesiastical and personal spiritual life. The author, Jean-Claude Larcher (born 1949), is an Orthodox French theologian and patrologist known outside France. He has published 30 books, translated into 18 languages, and about 150 articles in which he examines various areas of Orthodox theology, combining in his approach a respect for Tradition and a desire to respond to the questions and needs of modern man.
