Saint Theophan the Recluse of Vyshensky (1815–1894) left a rich spiritual and literary legacy. A special place in Bishop Theophan's literary works is occupied by his letters to various people, often laypeople seeking salvation in Christ. They represent a response to the many problems of his spiritual children, all stemming from a single question: "What is spiritual life and how can one attune oneself to it?" This is the fundamental question of life at all times, and it also confronts Christians today.

The letters included in this edition are written by Bishop Theophan to a young woman "who does not want to marry, but hasn't yet summoned the courage to enter a monastery." These letters are a frank and detailed description of a person's inner life. It is astonishing how Saint Theophan sensitively grasps the spiritual needs of the writer, heartily and patiently explains all questions and perplexities, and provides guidance on how to spiritually organize life in the world. He speaks of the need for renewal and self-purification through aversion to sin, struggle with passions, repentance, prayer, and reunion with God for the salvation of the soul.

These written counsels and instructions, imbued with fatherly love, have saved many from spiritual death and revived many to new life. They continue to strengthen our spiritual zeal, guide us on the path of truth, promote perfection in the knowledge of God and a God-pleasing life, and give us hope for salvation.
