The book "What is to be done?" by political prisoner N. Chernyshevsky (1828-1889) appeared in the solitary confinement cell of the Alekseevsky Ravelin of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Miraculously, this work passed the censorship thanks to a plot similar to a seasoned adventure novel and a description of a family drama... However, immediately after publication it was strictly banned as a work most dangerous to the foundations of the state. As a result, it was distributed in copies and caused great fermentation in people's minds. No Russian book before this one had caused such a resonance. The author managed to convincingly, in accordance with the spirit of the times, answer the eternal Russian question: "What is to be done?"
