After a century-long absence of Boleslav Mikhailovich Markevich (1822–1884), his famous trilogy of novels, A Quarter of a Century Ago, The Turning Point, and The Abyss, was published in Russian literature in the 1870s and 1880s. It became a unique epic testimony of the beginning decline of imperial Russia — a testimony that was all the more reliable because Markevich, like no other writer, knew the figures and all the circumstances of that era first-hand and foresaw its tragic end in the 20th century. Coming from an old noble family, he, thanks to his deep intelligence and talents, was an insider in the inner circle of Empress Maria Alexandrovna, and was well-connected with government circles and the high society of St. Petersburg. And therefore, St. Petersburg society, the landed gentry, officials and ordinary people are depicted by Markevich with a realistic, sometimes documentary-essay authenticity in a variety of faces and settings. In his characters, readers easily recognized real political figures of post-reform Russia, guessed prototypes of people from the capital's aristocracy, from the literary and theatrical environment - which gave his novels not only popularity, but also partly scandalous fame. Pictures of the passing life of the nobility are overshadowed in the trilogy by plots of the invasion of society and government by destructive forces that the authorities are unable to resist.
