The second half of the 19th century. The Kirga River originates among dense forests and impassable swamps. Perhaps its name dates back to Mongol-Tatar times, or perhaps it was given to newcomers or convicts. Many streams and rivers flow into the Kirga before it turns toward the village of Kharlovo. Within the village of Kharlovo is a small town called Chertyata, which over time expanded, expanded, and became known as the Chertyatskaya Hundred. Almost all the residents of Chertyata shared the same surname, and they were all related, albeit distantly. This book recounts the difficult lives of the Chertyata residents, with their daily chores and concerns, truthfully, without fiction or embellishment.

Maria Panfilovna Sosnovskikh was born into a peasant family and learned about farming from an early age. She went through all the cycles of building socialism: total collectivization, dispossession, a half-starved collective farm existence... She subsequently wrote the books "The Settlers," "The Little Devils," and "Childhood and Youth," which form a trilogy that tells the story of the fate of the Russian peasantry.
