This monograph is a continuation of the French historian Michel Pastoureau's extensive project—the history of color in Western European societies, from Ancient Rome to the 18th century. He began his research on Europeans' relationship with the color blue.

This time, Pastoureau focuses on one of the most enigmatic and controversial colors with a rather complex history: black. The author undertakes a true detective investigation into the adventures, and often misadventures, of black in Western European culture.

The color of primordial darkness, the Black Death, and the Black Knight, it migrated to monks' robes in the Middle Ages, soon dominating Protestant wardrobes, and became a favorite color of lawyers and merchants. During the Romantic era, it became an essential sign of melancholy attire, and later a marker of elegance and chic, while simultaneously becoming an essential attribute of everyday city life.
