The Black Death is one of the most terrifying images of Norwegian folklore, the embodiment of the great plague that struck Norway in 1346-1353 and killed almost two-thirds of the population. To this tragic period of the country's history, the outstanding Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen (1857-1914) dedicated his most famous book "Black Death" - fifteen ballads with illustrations, on which the plague appears in the image of a hunched old woman walking through the country with a broom and rake in her hands. "Black Death" is considered the pinnacle of Kittelsen's graphic work and a masterpiece of Norwegian book illustration.
